The catagen phase begins when the anagen phase ends and usually lasts around ten days. During this time, hair follicles get smaller, and hair growth slows down. Even though the hair separates from the base of the follicle, it stays in place during its last days of growth. At any moment, about five percent of the hairs on our heads are in the catagen phase.
